Workflow
It is important to realize that FrameAway does not do the cropping but rather acts as a crop transparent guide for other applications (you may use Preview for the actual cropping).
The Toolbox on the right hand side of the screen allows you to select the type of frame and the aspect ratio for your composition guide

Selecting the aspect ratio of your selection tells FrameAway to restrict your mouse movement when performing a selection so that it follows certain proportions

When you're happy with your selection size and placement, you make the FrameAway overlay click through so that mouse movements and pass through to the underneath application. At this point the toolbox will display "Ignores mouse". You then perform a crop in the application underneath FrameAway
